Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about diamonds, champagne and expensive meals.
Did I just write that?
The adage: “It’s the thought that counts,” comes to play quite frequently during the Valentine’s Day gift-giving season, especially if you have young children. After all, what mother would choose a diamond tennis bracelet over a crooked construction paper heart made with love and a bunch of broken crayons?
If you are looking for inexpensive ways your kids can share the love with their favorite family members, then consider these simple yet fun Valentine’s Day craft projects:
Heart Plates: Visit your local Dollar Store and pick up a bunch of cheap plastic plates. You can get them in a variety of colors, but for this project it’s best to buy white ones. Next, have your kids dip heart-shaped sponges in paint and stamp them onto the plates. Later, have the kids decorate the edge of the plate with buttons, glitter, sequins, stickers, etc. Older kids can write out a special message with markers. (The plates are to be used for decorative purposes only, so you don’t have to worry about the embellishments falling off in the dishwasher.) Finally, have your child write his name and the date on the back of the plate before presenting it to his Valentine.
Flower Pots Filled with Love: Head over to a local greenhouse or discount retailer and purchase inexpensive terra cotta pots. Let kids stamp, paint or draw hearts, flowers, rainbows or other Love Day-inspired designs on the pots. Older kids can write special Valentine’s Day messages or poems. You can further embellish the pots with stickers, glitter glue, buttons, or sequins. Once the items are glued in place, spray an acrylic sealer on the outside of the pot to seal the decorations. Finally, fill the pot with small candies like Hershey’s Kisses, M&Ms, mints or other hard candies. You could also opt to place a plant or flower in the pot before presenting it as a gift.
