Choosing a Yoga Class

There are many forms of yoga and if you are just starting out, you may not be sure which type is best suited for your personality. Choosing a compatible form is important because you will be more likely to stick with the practice if you are enjoying it.

There are many factors to consider when selecting a yoga class. Your level of flexibility, fitness, workout preferences and personality all play a role in selecting a form of yoga that is best for you. The answers to these factors are different for each person. Fortunately, there are many forms of yoga to try.

The level of intensity you enjoy in a workout will impact the type of yoga you prefer. People who like a strenuous workout may enjoy power yoga, Bikram or a vinyasa flow class, which are more intense. Do you like a more relaxed class? Try hatha, kripalu or integral yoga classes.

Flexibility varies from person to person. While you will enhance your overall flexibility through the practice of yoga, this can take time. If you are very flexible, an Ashtanga class may suit you.

Yoga offers many benefits for certain health conditions and people who have suffered injuries. However, if you have been injured, a strenuous yoga class may be too much and could cause harm. Try an Iyengar or restorative yoga class to give a gentle stretch. The modifications in Iyengar make it a great choice for rehab after an injury.

Many people use yoga as exercise, but some are interested in the spiritual elements of the practice. If you want to explore yoga’s spiritual side, try Kundalini, Anusara or Forrest yoga classes.

The best way to determine which form is really best for you is to try out a class. Some yoga studios offer many classes throughout the month and members are welcome to take as many classes as they’d like. A situation like this allows you to try various classes and choose your favorites. Most will let you pay by the class, so you can try it out before you sign up for a membership.
