The Bible and Marriage

Marriage is one of the most persistent and time-honored traditions in all history. For Christians, it is an important part of the religion to have a lifelong, monogamous partner whom they love and respect. This is believed to be correct because the Bible says so, and the Bible is the word of God. However, even some Christians may find it hard to find solid Biblical evidence for their beliefs in marriage. Following are some scriptures that illuminate God’s stance on marriage:

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24.

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Ephesians 5:24-28.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love. Prov 18.22, 5.18-19.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. If they fall, one will lift up his companion. Woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Eccl. 4.9-11

The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife has…1 Cor.7:3-4, 14

Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. Gen. 1:28.

From the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. Mr.10:6-9, Mt.19:4-6

What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Matt. 19:6

God’s guidelines for marriage become clear through his word: Respect your husband or wife, and put his or her needs before your own. He makes it clear that marriage is a positive commitment which can enrich life and bring both members of the marriage closer to God.
