Keeping Your Kids Safe Online

We live in a world of technology. We are constantly bombarded with the latest and greatest of everything. They even make cell phones for toddlers to call mom and dad now. With the constant growth in technology it is important to educate your children about staying safe online. Children who are educated about internet safety are much more likely to take precautions to stay safe than those who aren’t. The dangers of the online world are rampant. There are predators lurking around every corner, waiting for them to make a mistake. Talk to your children about the importance of staying … Continue reading

Finding Inexpensive Clothes for Slightly Older Kids

From the time we decided that I would leave my full time job and stay home with our first child, I have been practicing ways to save money. But now that our first child is nearly eight years old, there has been one area that has become more difficult: finding good quality clothing for him and cheap or free prices. One of the biggest reductions in costs for us was baby clothes. There is a wealth of great quality and great looking used clothes that could be had at thrift stores, yard sales and from generous friends. It was very … Continue reading

Kids Web Menu

This free program helps parents keep their children, even ones as young as two, safe on the web. Kids Web Menu 1.4 is an interface that you can install for use on your Windows PC. The software works by limiting children to visiting only pre-approved websites. Parents can choose what websites the kiddies can visit, and password protect their selections. Once running, the interface cannot be minimized (parents can click in a special area to get out of the program), so the little ones can’t go browsing around the computer. The manufacturer promises that kids can play online without any … Continue reading

GodTube and Other Christian Versions of Online Websites

Are you turned off by less than savory content on your favorite popular websites? Well, you may be surprised to know that the Christian community may just have a version of that same site out there on the Internet. YouTube is a great source of entertainment and sometimes education. You can find un-aired pilots of your favorite shows, cute kids spitting up spaghetti and dads lamenting about how tough it is to get kids to go to bed. Chances are that if there is a topic you can think of, there is also a video about it. But one thing … Continue reading

Internet Kids: Too Much Time Online?

If you think your kids are spending too much time on the computer, well then you are not alone. According to a 2007 annual report from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future, more and more parents are frustrated by the Internet sucking up too much much time from their children. The numbers reveal that 33 percent of all parents surveyed are worried, up from a mere 11 percent a few years ago. Kids today conduct whole lives online, and it seems that we are always encouraging them. Take for instance the fact that more … Continue reading

Do Computers Make Kids Dumb?

Yes, they do, at least according to a couple of researchers. The authors of the study are Thomas Fuchs and Ludger Woessmann of Munich University, and they conducted their tests way back in 2005. In the computing world, two years can be a very long time, but although the study is older, I think it is still pretty interesting. The study measured the performance of 100,000 pupils in 31 countries around the world and used the PISA, an international test geared for industrialized countries, to measure such things as analytical ability and general literacy. Students tested were all 15 years … Continue reading

National Geographic Kids Website

I really love really good education website for kids. Not only do they offer a learning environment, but they do it in such a way that is so much fun. My kids don’t even realize they are learning. In fact, they beg for time on the computer to “play” on these websites. Of course, I always play with them, and I am happy to say that with the National Geographic Kids website, I find myself learning a lot, too. Did you know, for example, that scientists have recently discovered yet another planet? Or that there is a type of goat … Continue reading
