Consider the Blessings

Another Sunday, and another great lesson in Relief Society. I really enjoy getting to participate in lessons in Relief Society after a long run in Primary. The lessons always seem to be exactly what we need to hear and being a part of a great group of women and their insight is always uplifting.

The conference talk that was the subject of our lesson this week was “Consider the Blessings” by our beloved Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson. The talk is a great one reminding all of us that we need to be more thankful for the blessings in our lives.

With all the negativity that is in the world, we could all use a little positivity. He speaks a lot of how our prayers are answered. He shares some pretty amazing stories of how he was an instrument in the Lord’s hands to answer prayers of others. A comment was made that it is easy to read a talk like that and feel inferior and like we are not making a difference in the world. After all, he is the Prophet, and comparing ourselves to him can have negative consequences. But, the sister that made the comment went on to say that his responsibility as the prophet is far greater than our own. We are only responsible for listening to the spirit in our own environment.

In the talk he says, “My brothers and sisters, the Lord’s purposes are often accomplished as we pay heed to the guidance of the Spirit. I believe that the more we act upon the inspiration and impressions which come to us, the more the Lord will entrust to us His errands.”

We need to be aware of the needs that are right in front of us. Whether it is a neighbor that needs help, one of our children, or someone we work with. Regardless, it is important that we listen to the Spirit so that we can truly be an instrument in His hands. Sure, we may not think our small efforts make a difference, but if we follow the Spirit in our own circle of influence, then we truly are doing the Lord’s work.
