Day to Day Help

Over the years the psalms have brought encouragement and help to many people, myself included. One reason is they are so honest and full of emotion and practical tips for our Christian lives.

Today I’m going to look at Psalm 48, which is not one of David’s psalms but a psalm of the sons of Korah. It starts by praising God for the city of Jerusalem that God has been pleased to call his own. Have you ever stopped to praise God for the city or place where you live and to pray for the people of that place?

The psalm also praises God for making Himself known as a stronghold. It is often on the troubled and dark times that we discover exactly how much of a stronghold God is. When all else is changing around us, He never changes. When God is in our lives He can and will, help us through even the most difficult circumstances. I know. I’ve experienced it. Do you know God as a stronghold in your life?

Verses 4- 8 the palmist shows how God is in control. The people knew it as a fact and had thought about the lovingkindness of God. Too often we don’t stop and think and then praise God for His lovingkindness to us each day.

The psalmist urges people to rejoice. When was the last time you rejoiced in all God has done?

Rejoicing has two effects. It gives God the honor he deserves and it lifts our spirits as well. Last night I was at music practice for church. What a joy to sing those songs glorifying God for what He has done. I had not felt like going particularly, as it was cold and it meant going out, but I am so thankful I did. It’s good to be reminded of God’s greatness and sing praises to Him.

Such is God, our God forever and ever. What comfort and security there is in that. He will guide us until death. Sometimes I don’t feel God guiding me. But God’s Word says He is. Therefore I can trust that He is guiding me even when I don’t feel guided. Trust needs to be built on what God’s Word says not on feelings.
