Disney and Disaster Preparedness

This summer, Walt Disney World will have a new Innoventions exhibit at Epcot. The title of this exhibit will be “StormStruck: A Tale of Two Homes”. StormStruck will focus on disaster preparedness and how to make your own home safe for when the next storm hits.

With the strange weather patterns we’ve been experiencing worldwide and the devastating effect of more and more storms, both warm and cold weather, the general public is beginning to realize that disaster preparedness is no longer for the seemingly crazy granola-crunching survivalists. Disaster preparedness is something that every family should consider and take very seriously. By creating this exhibit at Epcot, Walt Disney World is taking a very socially responsible step to inform the public, save lives and save homes.

Visitors to StormStruck will experience what it feels like to survive a life threatening storm. Once the storm passes, those visitors will learn about the safety measures they would need to take while seeing their home rebuilt. The announcement for StromStruck stated that it will be “very fast-paced and very fun.”

If you ask me, I think it is a great idea to combine the Disney magic of storytelling with a story that more and more Americans need to hear. If getting them to experience a deadly storm “ride” at Walt Disney World can convince them to be prepared and inform them on just how to do it for a real storm that may hit their own home at any moment, hooray!

The cost of repairing homes and infrastructure that are destroyed or otherwise affected by the storms tearing across the country, and the world, is growing every year. Preparedness just makes good sense. Why have your house destroyed and your family placed in danger, both during a storm and in the aftermath, when you can take steps to prepare now and ensure the safety and security of your family?

How do you feel about disaster preparedness? Are you prepared?
What things have you done to ensure your family’s safety and security during a time of disaster?
