Does Your Son Have Long Hair?

Despite being born and raised in Hawaii, I’ve never been into long surfer stud locks. I’ve never thought Fabio’s flowing mane was the least bit attractive, and I think boys with Cousin It bangs and hippie braids that cascade down their backs should be recruited for one of Oprah’s makeover shows.

But, that’s just me.

I come from the school of two dos for boys: Buzz or bowl cuts.

Now, before the hate mail starts rolling in, let me be perfectly clear—-I don’t care how long your son’s hair is, I’m just saying that I would strongly discourage my male offspring to sport shaggy locks that require the use of scrunchies, barrettes or other hair accessories to keep in place. I’d nix the mid-back cornrows too.

So I’m not Celine Dion, what can I say?

The singer’s 8 1/2-year-old son Rene-Charles went 8 years without a single haircut, and it showed.

Rene-Charles rocked his Rapunzel do forEVAH before finally getting snipped a few months ago.

It was the cut heard around the world.

Photos of a newly shorn Rene-Charles made the covers of several international newspapers.

“No Longer Mistaken As a Girl!” proclaimed one paper.

“Dion’s Son’s Hair Will NOT Go On!” exclaimed a British rag.

So much to do about a new do.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who thought the kid’s hip-length locks needed hacking (ahem!)… I mean trimming.

For years Dion and her bald-as-a-cue-ball husband Rene Angelil, stood behind their son’s decision to let his hair grow… and grow, and grow and grow.

“My son loves his long hair, and it doesn’t bother us,” Dion told reporters in 2008.

But, then in the fall of 2009, Rene-Charles showed up at a pro basketball game looking like… well… a boy.

According to Dion, Rene-Charles was forced to choose between his overgrown hair and his favorite school.

“I said that there’s a rule in school that you have to cut your hair short,” Dion told TV’s Access Hollywood. “If you want to go to that school, you have to cut the hair. If you don’t want to cut the hair, we are going to have to change schools.”

In the end, school prevailed and Rene-Charles is now sporting a shorter style. Though, if the boy ever pines for his old locks, he doesn’t have to search far to wax nostalgic. Apparently, Dion kept her son’s long tresses as a memento.

“I have this little ponytail thing that’s all baby hair, it’s all blond at the end,” Dion revealed. “It’s a part of him. It’s great. Of course I keep this in a very special place.”

Hopefully, it’s not under her pillow.
