Double the Fun

Experts predict the weak economy will continue to affect the travel industry well into 2012. Fortunately, there are ways you can escape with the entire clan without breaking the bank.

One option that has seen tremendous growth in the past couple of years is traveling with another family. If you love spending time with your BFF and her family, then consider doubling the fun by combining your broods and jetting off on a getaway the whole group will enjoy.

Depending on the size of your collective crew, you can save a bundle by taking advantage of group travel discounts. To reduce expenses even more, consider renting a large vehicle to accommodate everyone and split the cost. In addition, rather than renting multiple rooms, stay under the same roof in a cottage or condo with multiple rooms and divide the cost of accommodations and meals.

Once you determine the size of your group, it’s time to decide where to go. Theme parks are ideal for families vacationing together as they have a wide array of attractions for kids and adults of all ages. Disney resorts, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, and Knott’s Berry Farm are top picks among children and parents.

Another option is to visit a beach resort. There are a slew of family-friendly options in the Caribbean and Mexico. Look for properties that offer a host of different activities, from art classes and scuba diving lessons to rock climbing and trapeze swinging.

When planning a multiple family getaway make sure to get the kids involved in the planning process. Present them with some options you like and ones you think they would enjoy. Then, discuss the pros and cons of each before allowing the entire group to vote on a final selection.

Finally, it’s also a good idea to spend some solid bonding time all together before you head out on vacation. Seeing how the kids of both families deal with one another for an extended period of time will help determine if traveling with another clan is a wise move.
