Dressing Your Pets For Halloween

Let’s face it. Dogs and cats in costumes are pretty darn cute! Some pets like being dressed up; some pets will tolerate being dressed up. Some won’t stand for it at all! If you are thinking about including your pets in the Halloween costume parade, here are some ideas for you.

  • Dress your pet as another animal. A black dog just needs a white stripe down her back to be an adorable (and stink free) skunk! A leopard patterned coat makes a great jungle cat costume for your furry friend.
  • Dress your pet as a super hero. Capes aren’t just for people, you know! There are lots of famous pets with powers — Krypto the Superdog, Ace the Batdog, Blue Falcon’s partner Dynomutt. Two pets could go as a super-duo like Batman and Robin.
  • Dress your pet to match your children. Is your daughter going as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? Let your pup be Toto! Or the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion… you get the idea!

Don’t want to go costume crazy? Your pets can celebrate the season with a Halloween collar. Elmo’s Closet has a great selection of hand made collars in a variety of fall and Halloween themed fabrics. But wherever you buy your collars, make sure you’ve got the right size — you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your pet’s neck with ease. Any less room and it could be too tight; too much room and they could slip out of the collar.

Another adorable option if you don’t want to go for the full costume is a decorative ruff. These are often styled like jester collars with fabric or ribbon points (and sometimes bells) on an elastic band. Again, make sure the ruff isn’t too tight!

Last but not least, there’s always the stylish hat or headband option. Your pup or kitty can easily slip on a witch’s hat for a quick costume. Many pet hats have an elastic strap that fits underneath the chin to keep the hat in place. Make sure the hat you choose is soft and padded in the right places and that the strap isn’t too tight.
