Easter After Effects: The Sugar High Blues

It is the day after Easter and not a peep in the house. Where are they? You go upstairs to find two small children fast asleep at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Huh? Why, they are usually wide awake causing chaos and havoc at this time of the day when there is no school. This is the day after. The day after Easter. These children are suffering from the sugar high blues.

Easter was wonderful. The children awoke to find beautifully decorated Easter baskets all decked out in colorful cellophane wrap put together by yours truly. Yes, they had far too much candy, but it was Easter so you let it go. After all, Easter only comes once a year.

You went visiting relatives and had a wonderful dinner. You did, anyway, but they could not eat a thing because they were too stuffed with all sorts of sugary treats. They were wound up like tops when you brought them home, but then went to bed without a protest.

Today, they are feeling the effects of the day after too much candy. This is what happens when their sugar levels soar sky high and then proceed to slowly plummet. They become sluggish and tired.

School will begin tomorrow and their concentration levels will not be up to par. They may have some difficulty. They may have trouble focusing on their school work. Do not worry though, this will slowly diminish.

Even though it is Easter, you may want to try and curb how much candy the kids eat that day. You can let them have a little more than you usually would, but you should try to spread the rest of their Easter candy over a period of several days. The key here is to control how much candy they are receiving in the first place. Some people give other little gifts to fill up their Easter baskets with a minimal amount of candy.

Easter comes only once a year, so do enjoy, but moderation is the key in all circumstances.
