Easy Valentine’s Cards to Make

Valentine’s Day is coming! We’ve been so busy that the kids haven’t picked out Valentine’s at the drugstore yet. The good cards are probably all sold out. By the time we went to buy cards last year all that was left were Barbie and Barney. My then nine year old boys were not impressed.

Not to worry though, we can always make our own cards. I’ve seen a lot of cute ideas for homemade Valentine’s cards this year. One idea is to make a flower from cut out hearts and a small round lollipop, like a Dum Dum. The one I saw used four hearts for petals. I think a few more give it a prettier look. And I like to wrap yellow or pink tissue paper around the lollipop so that it looks more like the center of a flower. Cut out hearts, punch a hole in the bottom and thread them onto the lollipop stick. Arrange them around the candy. Secure the flower petal hearts by wrapping a small piece of tape around the lollipop stick, just under the paper hearts.

It’s easy enough to cut out a few a hearts, but if you are planning on doing these for a couple classrooms I’d recommend investing in a heart-shaped craft punch. I like the fact that you can use any paper for these hearts from construction paper to wrapping paper to scrapbook paper. You can also write fun messages on one or more of the hearts to personalize your Valentine.

Along the same idea, you can cut out a basic butterfly shape from any paper. For the middle and antennae of the butterfly you can use a old-fashioned candy stick, a piece of gum, a roll of smarties, or a pixie stick. Write your Valentines message on the wing or on the back of the butterfly. These can be decorated with glitter, stickers, paint, sequins, beads, or anything you have in the project box. For a special gift, they could even be decorated with sparkly earrings.
