Family-Friendly Fall Travel Deals

Leave it to the travel industry to come up with creative alternatives to spending Veteran’s Day cleaning house or Thanksgiving with crabby Aunt Sue. Long holiday weekends are an ideal time to escape from the stress of extended family dysfunction and spend quality time with your spouse and kids.

The following getaways are easy on the nerves and your wallet:

OHIO

Sawmill Creek Resort in Sandusky, Ohio, is offering a fabulous travel package to kick-off the property’s annual Festival of Lights. The two-night Thanksgiving package for a family of four starts at $279 and includes Thanksgiving brunch, a carriage ride, hayride through the holiday light display, and breakfast on Friday (additional nights can be added for just $79.). Kids will love the chance to make hot chocolate with Mrs. Claus and nosh on donuts with Santa’s elves. The deal also includes access to the resort’s indoor pool, nature trails and video arcade.

NEW YORK

Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown, New York is also offering a two-night Thanksgiving Family Weekend package. It starts at $575 per couple (add $120 per child 5-12 and $150 per teen) and includes lodging, two dinners and two breakfasts for each guest (kids 4 and under stay and eat free). In addition, the historic hotel is hosting a smorgasbord of activities for the entire family from November 25-29. Among the featured attractions are clown performances, nightly kids’ movies, ghost stories, bingo sessions, cookie decorating and horse-drawn hayrides through Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The weekend wraps up with a visit by Santa, who is scheduled to make a special appearance at breakfast on Saturday morning.

OREGON

Salishan Spa and Golf Resort in Gleneden Beach, Oregon wants to pamper you this fall. The luxury lodge, located on Oregon’s stunning coastline, features an 18-hole golf course, world-class spa, an indoor pool and tennis courts. While you are enjoying some much needed R&R, your kids can head over to the resort’s game zone, which is stocked with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, plus classic games like air hockey. Three-night fall packages start at $399 and include accommodations, plus a turkey diner, if you visit during Thanksgiving.
