Family Home Evening: 4 Ideas for Teaching Life Skills to Your Children

One fund idea for a family home evening night is to have a time when you focus on teaching specific home making skills to your entire family. You should open with a short spiritual thought and scripture at the beginning of the night. You could plan to do this as “Missionary Prep” series or “Family Helper” series once a month. Here are four ideas of skills you may want to teach your family.

1) You can have a family home evening that teaches your family to cook. Some families have a system already implemented in which they have each child cook one night a week. If this is the case for your family, you could focus on a gourmet meal and talk about fancy cooking techniques. If this not the case you may want to start with the basics.

2) You could teach basic laundry and caring for your clothing skills. This could cover washing and sorting the laundry if you have primarily younger children. If you have older children you can include sewing on a button, making simple clothing repairs basic stain removal and ironing. You may want to split this up into two nights if you feel that it is too much to cover all at once. Once you have taught this you may encourage your children to do their own laundry or add it to your chore rotation.

3) Once you have teenagers a simple car repair class is a great idea. My sister once changed the tire on a double date she was on, because she was the only one of the four who knew how. You can teach how to test a battery, jumpstart a car, change the oil (only if you know how), and to check the fluids on the car. These are very useful skills to have.

4) You could have a family home evening that focuses on the financial aspects of the family. You could discuss budgeting choices, how to write a check and how to balance a checkbook as part of the discussion. You could also take your children to the grocery store and teach them how to correctly figure out the unit price on all the items.
