Fasting with a Purpose

Fasting each month is a way that each member can improve his spirituality. One thing that helps to make fasting more effective is to have a purpose while fasting. This helps you to focus your prayers and your thoughts while fasting. It can also help you listen to the Spirit for guidance. Here are four ideas on topics that you may consider making the focus of your fast.

1) You can fast to receive guidance and/or help for a problem that you are facing. This could be with your job, finances, a relationship or concern for a child. Many of the personal reasons that we fast would fit into this category. As you fast for these reasons be sure to pray vocally for guidance, and to listen carefully as you pray. You should also pay attention to any promptings you receive during the day.

2) You may fast for someone else who is ill or going through a serious trial. You may do this as a family or a ward. As you fast and pray for this person, you can feel the spirit. You may be prompted in ways that you can help (simple acts of service). You may also be given comfort as you watch someone you care for struggle.

3) You can fast for rain or for those who have recently survived a natural disaster. Several stakes that I have lived in have requested that we fast for rain. I know that the fasts have been answered because there is usually a flood sometime shortly after that. The power of many people fasting for the same purpose is incredible.

4) You can also fast to express your gratitude for the many blessings that Heavenly Father has given to you. It is important to give thanks. As you fast this way, your heart will become full as you realize the many blessings that you truly have in your life.
