Each religious sect is blessed to have books written by knowledgeable members of their church that define and clarify different points of doctrine. I would like to share with you, in no particular order, some books written for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that I have particularly enjoyed. I invite you to share doctrinal books from other sects in the comment trail as well.
1. “The Miracle of Forgiveness” by Spencer W. Kimball. This book outlines the meaning of sin, the consequences of it, and the way back to full fellowship. While there is a definite tone of no-nonsense about the book, there is also a strong message of the compassion of a loving Heavenly Father who reaches out to us and will help us with all we need in order to make things right.
2. “Believing Christ” by Stephen Robinson. Sometimes we fail to see the difference between believing in Christ and believing Him, that He really will do the things that He says He will do. This book is a key to developing a deeper, more trusting relationship with Christ.
3. “Standing for Something” by Gordon B. Hinckley. The president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints outlines the values he feels are missing from our homes and families today, tells us why we need them, and gives suggestions for how we can incorporate them into our own lives, making the world a better place.
4. “Mormon Doctrine” by Bruce R. McConkie. This book serves as an encyclopedia and a dictionary for the Latter-day Saint religion. Anything you want to know about what Mormons believe or what certain phrases in the Mormon dialect mean, this book will tell you about it. It’s not a book you read from cover to cover, but it’s a valuable reference book and one every LDS family should have on their shelf.
5. “The Neal A. Maxwell Quote Book.” Neal A. Maxwell was a very deep thinker, a philosopher, and a verbal artist. Every phrase he used was a whole sermon unto itself. I like “The Quote Book” because it takes his most profound thoughts and sets them apart from each other, and you can digest them one at a time.
I welcome your comments. What are some of the other LDS doctrinal books you have found most uplifting? What books would you recommend to me that would increase my understanding of other religions?
