February 2008 Preparedness Goals

Tonight at our Enrichment meeting we had a discussion of what provident living really means. It was interesting to hear the input of so many different people. In addition to the food storage, there were many other aspects in which provident living can affect your life. This month’s goals are going to focus on bringing provident living more into your life.

1) One way to increase your provident living is to live a thrifty lifestyle. This would include using your food storage well, and not wasting it. Additionally you may find that you can save money on clothing or heating. This month I am going to refocus on my grocery shopping in order to increase the amount I can buy with my normal grocery budget.

2) Another aspect of provident living is to be self-reliant. This month choose one area or skill that you would like to learn and develop it. This could be sewing, gardening, cooking from scratch, baking or home repairs. You may take a class in the community or ask someone else to teach you what to do. Additionally you may want to teach these skills to your children.

3) Provident living means planning and saving for the future. You should have financial stores set aside as well as food storage. Take the time this month to figure out a way to save more money each month and put it in savings. Set a specific goal of at least fifty dollars a month.

Finally as an additional challenge you may want to share what you have with others. Look around your home and see if there is anything you can give away. You may have clothing that your children have outgrown that could be passed on to a family in the ward. You may toys that are no longer played with or a stack of gardening pots, you know you’ll never use. Pass these things onto someone who needs them.
