FHE For Small Children-The Prexistence

This past Sunday, my 4 year old gave his very first talk in primary. I was so proud of him. I helped him prepare his talk by asking him a series of questions about what he knew about the earth since the theme was, “Heavenly Father created the Earth for His children”.

He told me things like it is really big. It is in space. It has lots of different countries. It was really fun to find out what he knew about earth. I asked him what his favorite thing to do on earth was, and he replied, “Eat!” Very typical answer for my little boy.

So, after hearing him give his talk, I decided it might be good to help him learn more about where we were before we came to earth. We decided to center our family home evening around that subject. I got one of their board books that is called, “My Little Book About Jesus” by Val Bagley. The very first picture in the book is of the premortal existence. We talked about who was there, and what things were like there. I also told them about Satan and his plan. We talked about how we didn’t have bodies like we have now, but we really wanted them. This was one of the reasons that we wanted to come to earth. To gain a body. The kids were very interested in the lesson, and participated well.

Today as we were out in the car running errands, my 4-year-old had a different church book that he was looking through that just happened to be in the car. I heard him “telling the story” of the pictures in the book. And, I heard his little voice say, “And, we had spirit bodies”. It put a smile on my face because I knew that he had been listening the night before to our lesson. I was so proud to see the fruits of our labor. Having family home evening with small children is not always easy, but I know in the long run, it will be worth it.
