Fitness for Your Emotions

It might be the last thing you think about when you are feeling down but did you know that exercise can put you in a better mood? Think about what you typically do when you are feeling down. Many of us probably turn to food, sit in front of the television or do some other mindless activity. We do these things because they seem to have a numbing affect on us.

What happens after you have eaten that whole bag of chips or wasted hours in front of the television? Do you feel any better? No. In fact, you usually end up feeling even worse. So try something different the next time you are feeling down. Take a drive to a park or some other scenic place, get out and take in some new scenery as you walk. Hit a punching bag. Run in place. Put on some of your favorite music and dance away.

It’s like fitness for your emotions that in turn, provides great body fitness. Sadness or depression can deplete us of energy so granted, it won’t be easy to do something physical. It will take a great deal of strength and will to muster it up. But once you do, you will begin to feel so much better about yourself. Compare how you would feel if you ate a chocolate cake compared to taking a walk by the lake? Which do you think is going to raise your spirits?

Now sometimes when you are feeling down, you need someone to talk to. So why not invite a friend to join you for a walk? This way you can get in some exercise and talk to someone who can help you work through your feelings. There is really nothing better than getting in some fitness and talking with a friend.

I know this sounds easier than it probably will be but I really challenge you to try this the next time you are feeling down.
