Focus on Food Storage

The rising cost of food may make it more difficult to begin or complete your food storage. However, you can still do it even if you have a limited budget and limited space. You just need to make a consistent goal to put food storage away each month. It is important to start small. The recent pamphlet from the church puts the order as preparing your 72 hour kit, then your two week supply of water. After that you need to store three months of food. Then you should move onto a year’s supply of food.

Your 72 hour kit is fairly easy to find food to store. It is a good idea to store everything in a backpack or other bag that you can easily carry with you. You can purchase emergency kits through many online stores or catalogues. However your children may not go for eating a power bar for three days. You may want to buy peanut butter and crackers, tuna fish and crackers. You can add granola bars and other foods that your children will eat. Conference weekend is a great time to rotate your 72 hour kit supplies.

Your water supply is easy to get. You should plan on a gallon a day per person. Storing it may be a bit difficult. However, if you buy the bigger 3 liter bottles in the cases, they stack fairly well. You can stash the water in the closet, and other various small areas in your home.

Your three month supply you can do with just a few extra dollars a month. You just buy extra amounts of the food that you already it. You can be super organized and have a full menu planned out and then check off as you buy the ingredients you need. You can also rotate through this food storage on a regular basis, because you just replace what you’ve used.

The full year’s supply should follow the church’s guidelines to include wheat, beans, oil, sugar and other food staples. However, you should work on incorporating many of these foods into your regular diet, so that if you do need to use this food, you will not be sick while you are adjusting to it.
