Focus on the Candidates – Rand Paul

Focus on the Candidates Rand Paul Find more family blogs at Families.comThis blog is part of the series that focuses on the candidates who are running for President of the United States in 2016. This blog focuses on Rand Paul.

Rand Paul is the son of Ron Paul (who ran unsuccessful campaigns for President of the United States in 1988, 2008, and 2012.) Rand Paul is running for President of the United States in 2016, and is also running for Senate in Kentucky at the same time. Rand Paul was elected as a Senator of Kentucky in 2011 and he would need to be re-elected in order to keep his seat after January of 2017.

Health Care
According to his official website, Rand Paul states “One of my first acts [as President] would be to repeal the abomination that is Obamacare”. As an alternative, he “will ensure that real free-market principles are applied to the American health care system so that it is responsive to patients, families, and doctors, rather than government bureaucracy.”

Women’s Health Care
According to his official website, Rand Paul states that he believes that life begins at conception. His website says: “Our government should not be responsible for funding abortions, and as President, I will attempt to stop the flow of taxpayer dollars to groups who perform or advocate for abortion.”

It is worth noting that zero taxpayer dollars are spent on abortion – due to the Hyde Amendment. What Rand Paul is talking about is eliminating the Medicaid and Title X reimbursement that Planned Parenthood (and other health care clinics) receive after providing cancer screenings, STD screenings and treatment, pap smears, and contraception to low-income people.

Immigration
According to his official website, Rand Paul “does not support amnesty, but rather I support a legal immigration process”. He wants to “secure the border immediately” and to put on hold the issuance of any visas or the starting of the legal immigration process until after the border is secure. He also wants to “put pressure on the Department of Homeland Security” to create a secure border and “an effective visa tracking system”.

Education
According to his official website, Rand Paul believes that “the federal government should not dictate what happens in our local classrooms.” He wants to abolish Common Core. He also wants “to encourage a variety of educational formats – whether it’s public, charter, private, religious, homeschool, or online.”

Jobs
According to his official website, Rand Paul believes that the Fair and Flat tax eliminates payroll taxes. He says these taxes are “seized by the IRS from a worker’s paychecks before a family ever sees the money”. He believes that the elimination of that tax will “boost the incentive for employers to hire more workers, and raise after-tax income by at least 15% over 10 years.”
