Follow the Counsel to Be Prepared by Starting Simply

With the downturn in the economy, and the beginning of the severe weather season in the Midwest, it is an excellent time to be prepared. The church leaders have established the counsel of preparedness and provident living to help us during difficult times and to give us peace as we face unknown situations. As you prepare for your family you should pray and make sure that you catering to your family’s individual needs.

One of the easiest you can do to begin preparing for food storage is to set up a 72-hour kit for each member of your family. Simply gathering items that you already have available around your house can comprise the majority of your kit. You can also do this as a family home evening activity.

In each individual kit you will want two changes of clothes, a warm jacket or coat and something that will bring the individual comfort. Additionally you should include drinks and snacks for each individual. You can also include items that can help to entertain your children. You may also want to include a copy of the Book of Mormon in each emergency kit. You should be sure to include identifying information in the kit, and if you have young children you may want to attach the information to them so that they can get back to you if you are separated. Each of these kits should be stored in a backpack that the child can easily carry.

The adults in your family will have different kits that include these items, plus more food and a first aid kit. You may also include a tent for the family and a portable camping stove that you could take with you if you had to evacuate suddenly. It is also a good idea to include iodine drops so that you can purify water if you need to.

The church then suggests that you focus on a three-month supply of food that you actually eat on a regular basis. If you set this up following the typical menu that you follow, it should not be too difficult to rotate this food on a regular basis. This also means that you should be able to help those around you when there is a need. How has having your food storage blessed your life? Do you have any additional tips on assembling 72-hour kits?
