There seems to be an app for just about everything you could want one for. Earth Day is not typically celebrated or participated in through the use of an app on a smartphone. Even so, there are now some Earth Day apps out there. Here are some that you can legally download for free.
Here are some for iOS devices:
Earth Day Carol is a free app that is designed for both iPhone and iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later, and is customized for iPhone 5. This app re-tells the Charles Dicken’s classic A Christmas Carol and gives it an environmental theme. Plastic Bottle Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Plastic Past, Plastic Present, and Plastic Future. It is designed to be an educational, yet fun, app to teach kids about keeping the planet clean.
Make Change, Not Waste is a free app that is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone5, iPad, and several generations of the iPod Touch. It requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app was designed for people who like to shop at Whole Foods. It provides coupons for green brands (that you unlock by completing 10 green actions). You can also earn badges for green lifestyle behaviors such as using a reusable bag.
Scrapkins Scrap Collector is a free app that is designed to teach young children about the importance of recycling, as well as how to do it. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iOS 3.2.1 or later. There is a game with a cartoon monster named Itcher, whom you move around to help him catch recyclables.

Earth Day Carol is free to download. It requires a minimum operating system of Android 2.2. It appears to be the exact same app as the one for iOS devices. Read the description above for more details.
Recycle It! is another Earth Day app that is free to download. It requires a minimum operating system of Android 2.3. This game is appropriate for both children and adults. You are a green, cartoon, dinosaur. Your goal is to sort recyclables and keep the machines that do the recycling in working order. It looks like fun!
Light Bulb Finder is a free app that requires a minimum operating system of Android 1.6. This app helps you to find the right energy-saving light bulbs for your home. You can view the financial rewards and environmental impact of each of the light bulbs that the app recommends.
