Frugal Ceiling Stars

Kids just love those glow-in-the-dark stars that you stick to the ceiling, don’t they. They are generally made out of plastic or come in sticker form. If you want to cover an entire ceiling, these stars can get pretty expensive. Well, here is a smarter way to fill your ceiling with stars for a fraction of the cost. And, as a bonus, these stars take care of the two main problems you get with the store-bought ceiling stars. Either they won’t stay on the ceiling, falling off instead, or they stick so tightly to that ceiling that you can never get them off without damaging the ceiling itself.

But here is what you can do instead. Go out and get some glow-in-the-dark paint. Then take a thin dowel and dip it into the paint. Next, dab the dowel in random taps against the ceiling, reloading it with the paint as necessary. The dots will look as if they are a million stars in the sky at night. You won’t be able to see the stars in the daytime, though, another bonus over those plastic ceiling stars.

If you want to get fancy, you can make shapes out of small sponges to add planets, comets and other space features, but I personally like it simple with just the dots. With all of the little dots, the stars seem to almost twinkle. My son is a big fan of Buzz Lightyear, from Toy Story, and I plan on using this idea when we redo his room to give it a feeling of being in space. I know the stars will grow with him, and if it ever comes time for a change, we don’t have to live with the stars. We can simply paint over the glow-in-the-dark paint.
