While the commercials will tell you that fast food is inexpensive and so convenient, I will tell you that making your own versions at home is even more inexpensive and just as convenient.
I don’t know about you, but I would rather take a little extra time out of my morning on one day to create a week’s worth of breakfast that can be grabbed on the go instead of having to detour to a fast food place each day (and hand over my money for a soggy or cold breakfast). The same can be true of lunch and even dinner, but let’s start with breakfast.
Here are some of my tips for frugal fast food at home.
“McBreakfast”
There are two ways to make a quick egg sandwich that can be grabbed in the morning. Just a few second in the microwave, and you are ready to go.
Start with any of the following, according to your preference: biscuit, bagel or English muffin. These can be store bought or homemade.
Next, cook up your meat selection if you want one. Make an extra batch of ham or bacon on a weekend and save some for your sandwiches.
Finally, cook up the eggs. We tend to prefer fried eggs, but if you make a scramble, it cab be a bit faster to prepare multiple sandwiches.
Add your cheese, assemble, wrap and store in the fridge. They will stay tasty for at least three days.
Other ideas for breakfast that are even easier include homemade pancakes. I always make a ton of extra pancakes because they store for at least a week in the refrigerator, freeze very nicely and can be used in a pinch to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch when you run out of bread.
Throw a pat of butter on the pancake and microwave it for about 30 seconds right before you head out of the door. Fold over and eat on the go. If you miss the sweetness of syrup, consider adding chocolate chips or sweet berries to the batter, or dusting the pancakes with powdered sugar.
