Do you know why it is so much easier to spend today than it was a few years ago? If not, you’ll want to read through last week’s articles. We have also covered a lot of new ideas, from reusing items to creating frugal meals for your family.

March 3rd

Whole Turkey Versus Turkey Breasts: Cost Comparison

In an article from last week, I talked about the great value of a whole turkey. One question that came up was about buying turkey breasts instead, for a family that won’t eat the dark meat. So, I thought I would do a cost comparison between the price of a whole turkey and purchasing turkey breasts, so see where the better value lays.

My Frugal Turkey Meals

Last Friday, I roasted a whole 19-pound turkey for my family of five. No, we didn’t eat the whole thing at once, of course, but I wanted to share all of the meals that were and will be made from the turkey. It really is very cost effective.

Social Hall Dinners

As we mentioned earlier, the recession is going to have a big impact on our food bills. With food prices rising by the day, we need to really buckle down and become extra clever about our food choices.

Reasons We Spend Today: Availability

Did you know that there are tons and tons of statistics that show that most Americans carry a good deal of debt and modern families can’t seem to keep their heads above water. And analysts predict that this is only going to get worse this year. Yes, the recession and the real estate down turn have something to do with our financial states, but most of the debt that we have incurred as individual families in a nation has to do with our spending habits.

Reasons We Spend Today: Buying Power

Do I believe that it is easier to spend now than it was a few years ago? Absolutely. I’ll be going through some of the reasons for that opinion.

New Uses for Bread Bags

Thanks to the great deals at the bakery thrift store, we have been buying a lot of bread for sandwiches and toast. I have been saving the bread maker usage time for rolls, quick breads and pizza dough. As a result, we are quickly accumulating a lot of bread bags. I thought it might be a good idea to share some ideas for reusing bread bags. Some of these ideas we use in our own home, some ideas I researched, and some ideas were given to me by friends and readers. Do you have an idea that doesn’t appear here? Please leave a comment and tell us all about it. We can always use some new ideas!

Tightwad Gazette: “What to Do with…”

After dinner, I decided to browse through my copy of the Tightwad Gazette II, the real handbook for frugal living. In one section, there was a round up of reuse ideas. Many of the materials used in these ideas are quite unusual. So, I thought I would share some of those ideas with you, and add a few comments of my own.

Reusing Shower Curtains

Whether you are redecorating your bathroom or changing out your shower curtain because of wear, you might want to take advantage of that old shower curtain and use it in some new ways.

End of Loaf Meat and Cheese Deals

You can pay an enormous amount for cold cuts these days. Because of this, I’ve been opting to cook whole turkeys and chickens and use that meat for sandwiches. It is a lot cheaper and much tastier, I think. But because I don’t have a food slicer, I tend to steer away from using a whole or half ham for sandwiches. And there is no way to cook a cheese, let alone slice it without a good slicer.
