My best friend from Hawaii and her husband will be joining us for Thanksgiving this year. I couldn’t be happier. We’re already planning a special feast and my 6-year-old is thrilled to put her first grade Thanksgiving-theme crafts on display for all to see.
Given that our friends are traveling such a long way to celebrate the holiday with us, we thought it would be nice to incorporate some of their favorite foods into the meal and decor. For example, since my BFF’s husband is a chocoholic we’re planning to make a special chocolate tart to add to the dessert table in addition to the traditional pumpkin and apple pies.
Also, my daughter and I are planning to channel our inner Martha Stewarts to create the domestic diva’s Chocolate Turkey Place Card/Take-Home Treat. Hopefully, the sweet gobblers will turn out okay. I specifically chose a Martha Stewart craft project that was suitable for young children. The turkey craft is super simple. Creating the seasonal confection takes some patience and that’s about it. All you’re really doing is crafting a turkey place card and wrapping it around a chocolate bar.
It may sound simple, but the end result is quite elegant. What’s more, your kids will love helping out with a project that takes center stage at the Thanksgiving dinner table.
Here’s how to make the Chocolate Turkey Place Cards:
1. Find a picture of a turkey that you want to feature on the chocolate bar place card. You can download turkey clip art and print onto heavyweight matte paper, use an actual photo or design your own gobbler.
2. Once you have the appropriate amount of birds (one per candy bar or more if they are small), cut them out and place them on the side.
3. With a felt-tip pen, write the name of each guest on a place card.
4. Remove wrapper from a 3-by-6-inch chocolate bar (leave foil intact).
5. Wrap clip art (photo or your own design) around the chocolate bar, centering image on front. Trim paper to fit if needed.
6. Secure clip art with a strip of double-sided tape.
7. Place each candy bar on or near individual place settings.
