Fun for Grown-Ups at Disney: The BoardWalk

It’s been awhile since I’ve written one of these, so I thought I’d introduce the column again. In this recurring feature, I like to put a spotlight on activities at one or more of the Disney parks that are perfect for adults adventuring at Disney sans kids.

I realize that my pick for this month’s column on fun for grown-ups at Disney might seem a little strange. When I was younger my family went to the beach nearly every year, sometimes on our own and sometimes as a part of a group trip. A tour around the boardwalk was always part of our experience, and one I usually enjoyed more than the beach itself.

Grown-ups staying alone at Disney, or who are able to find childcare for a few hours, should return to the Disney World BoardWalk in the evening for its nightlife. On top of that, adults should be able to further appreciate the historical designs of the BoardWalk, modeled after the classic walks at Coney Island, Atlantic City, and more.

What’s great about meandering around the BoardWalk at night is that admission is free and there is plenty of entertainment right out there on the boards. Live music, street performers, midway games, and food vendors all come out to the Disney World BoardWalk at night, making it the perfect place for a relaxing or romantic stroll.

When you’ve had your fill of ambling through the night air, then the BoardWalk has several indoor entertainment options. Why not try ducking into the Atlantic Dance Hall, the BoardWalk’s primary nightclub for ages 21 and up.

The Atlantic Dance Hall combines the best of classic night clubs with more modern music; while there you can dance to your favorite songs from the 80s through today, all in a recreated art deco setting with star lights shining from the ceiling. The Hall even has giant video screens on which you can request to watch your favorite music videos while dancing along to the tunes.

If you don’t want to spend the whole night on your feet dancing, then head over to Jellyrolls. Another 21-and-over club, Jellyrolls is the BoardWalk’s dueling piano bar. You can still dance in the aisles or even on-stage at Jellyrolls, but they also have tables at which to get off your feet and listen to the music (though the tables go fast, so be there early).

Disney World’s BoardWalk also has many options for those who’d prefer a more relaxed dining experience. Kick back with casual American food and a pint at the BoardWalk’s own micro brewery, the Big River Grille & Brewing Works. Sample celebrity chef Cat Cora’s finest Mediterranean cuisine at Kouzzina, or catch the latest game at the ESPN Club. For a classy, romantic evening try The Flying Fish Cafe, featuring fresh seafood in nautical-themed surroundings complete with an onstage kitchen.

While there’s plenty for the whole family to do at the Disney World BoardWalk, the location also makes for a perfect night out for adults. For details on the shops, dining, and entertainment at the BoardWalk, check out its page on the official Disney World web site.
