Getting Fit Frugally

apple Now is a great time to make a commitment to fitness. While some people spend hundreds on gym memberships and thousands on equipment, you don’t have to do so. Here are my favorite ways to get fit for free or for very little cost.

You can find all sort of exercise videos available at the library. Most libraries offer them free for up to three weeks with the ability to renew. Try different workouts all for nothing in the comfort of your home.

Speaking of home, explore your own backyard or neighborhood. Go walking, running, hiking or hill climbing, depending on where you live. For variety, you can check out neighboring areas and towns.

For strength training, a few dumbbells of various sizes can really give you a lot of variety in your workout. Wal-mart sells some inexpensive ones for a dollar each, or you can look for them in thrift stores, at garage sales on online.

Going online is a great idea for getting fit. There are plenty of free podcasts available with fitness instruction and workout programs. Another good source is YouTube, where tons of workout videos are available instantly.

Check out your own cable television and on demand offerings. There are usually workout programs broadcasted in the mornings, or playable anytime with on demand service. Before you buy anything, check them out.

Make kids your workout partners. Kids are constantly moving. Take advantage of this to play physical games with them or even use them as resistance (safely of course). They will love it, and you’ll get a free workout. Jump rope, play basketball, run races, and whatever else you can all think of doing for fun.

Take advantage of guest passes and trial memberships. Many fitness centers offer two-week or more free trials so you can try out the equipment. Friend who are members may also have guest passes that you can use to take a class or try out the equipment.

How do you stay fit for less? C’mon, share those ideas!
