Getting Ready For Yard Work

It’s time for yard work and if you haven’t already, it’s time to drag out the lawn and garden tools. Now if you are like most people all of your yard equipment was carefully cleaned and prepped before it was stored away for the winter.

If you are like me, you thought you had one more weekend to get to the chore. Then the cold and snow came and, if you are like me, you quickly shoved everything in the shed and locked the door. Now you have to open that door and deal with the mess.

I find it’s easier if I just empty out the shed. Every Spring I clean the shed, organize everything in there. I even put things away correctly for about a month or so, but then I’m in a hurry so just this once I shove things where they don’t go. I never get around to cleaning it up again so every Spring I have start over.

After you’ve brought the lawn mower, weed eater, wheel barrow, and yard tools out give them a good spray with the garden hose. You might have to use the jet setting, that stuff has been caked on there for months.

After things are reasonably clean it’s time to start assessing the damage. How are the wheels on the lawnmower and wheelbarrow? Do they need patching or replacing? Better do it now. Do the mower blades need sharpening? Did you change the oil last year?

Before you can get down to the serious yard work that awaits you, you will have to spend some time getting your tools ready. Have things sharpened or sharpen them yourself if you are handy. One of my friends keeps all her hand held garden tools in a bucket of sand. She rinses them off when she is done and sticks them in the sand. It works for her, I may try it, if I can find a bucket, and some sand, and then, in a few months, remember why I have a bucket of sand in the shed.
