Tomorrow is my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. I love the idea of dedicating an entire day to reflecting on things that we are thankful for and spending time with loved ones. In fact, one of the things that I enjoy the most about it is that the arrival of Thanksgiving gets people in a grateful and appreciative mood before the actual holiday as well as during and after it. Today, I would like to join my fellow bloggers Richele McFarlin and Stephanie Romero in expressing thanks for my home based businesses.
My two home based businesses have given me the freedom to fulfill what I see as my most important role in life in the way that I want to fulfill it. Being a mother has always been a dream of mine and just about two years ago that dream came true with the arrival of our little boy, Dylan. Now, we have another baby on the way and we are thankful that we are already almost halfway to meeting Dylan’s little brother or sister. Before Dylan was born, my husband and I decided that it was very important to both of us that I stay home with our children. We are still so happy that we made that decision, and I love spending my days with my amazing little man.
Along those same lines, I am grateful for the ways in which my husband supports my home – based businesses. From taking days off of work to be with our son when I have to go to court, to telling me (on more than one occasion) that he appreciates how I have found ways to work from home while being a full time stay at home mom, not a day goes by that I do not feel supported in my home-based endeavors. When we were preparing for Dylan’s arrival, we realized that we had a choice of which parent would stay home to care for him. My husband would be a wonderful stay at home dad, but he let me be the one to stay home while he went to work. I feel fortunate for that, because the decision really could have gone either way based upon each of our abilities to nurture and provide everyday care for a child and our respective earning capacities.
When I first started working from home, I knew what I was doing with my law practice. I had already been practicing for about a year on my own and I knew that I just had to keep the case load small enough to be manageable. When I started writing, I knew that I could write but I certainly had no idea about the business of writing. I just went out there and started bidding on jobs. Some were okay, a couple did not work out, and a couple have turned out far better than I could have imagined. I have become (virtually) acquainted with some amazing people and I love the work. No one had to give me a chance, no one had to hire me, but they did and I will be forever grateful for that.
Do you have a home – based business that you are thankful for?
