Golden Sky by EC Stilson

To call this a book is to do it an injustice. Golden Sky is Elisa’s journal, with her heart laid bare on each page, every raw and real emotion dealt with in black and white.

As a parent my biggest fear has always been something happening to my child. I know that’s a fear for most parents. I cannot imagine being nineteen and finding out my baby had problems so severe that he may not make it. That’s what happened to Elisa. Already the parent of a very young child and expecting her second when she received the worst news a parent can get, your unborn child has severe problems. In the midst of everyone giving their advice, suggesting abortion was the kindest thing, Elisa was determined to give her son a chance. Even when everyone said to let him go Elisa gave her son every chance she could.

The death of a child is earth shattering and life changing; very few marriages can withstand it. Like most, Elisa’s marriage fell apart. She and Cade, her husband, both turned inward with their grief, effectively turning away from each other.

This is the story of loss, an unbearable loss, and finding your way to love again. Elisa is so young, you can hear it in the voice she uses when she writes, you want to protect her from this hurt but no one can. She must stay strong for herself and her daughter, coming out on the other side, stronger, wiser and carrying the memory of her son forever.

The strength it took to do the right thing, from giving birth to Zeke to letting him go when the time came, is incredible. Elisa questions her choices, feeling that first she doomed her son to pain and then that she let go too soon. Ultimately she did the right thing, not for herself, but for her child.

In this book Elisa is a shining example of pure motherhood, the love for her children shines through. It must have been hard to write and even harder to read when she decided to publish it. This is a heart wrenching story of one family’s journey to the darkest place parents can go and their fight to make their family stronger.
