Green Home Tips

Did you know that a plastic shower curtain can be dangerous to your health? It can release dangerous levels of volatile organic compounds. If you want to protect your health and your environment, you’ll want to read the following green home tips.

First, let me offer a reading recommendation for anyone who is interested in being more aware of healthy products. There is a magazine called Body & Soul that offers a lot of great information on this subject. Many of the tips I have for you today were inspired by some recent issues.

Now let’s get back to that shower curtain. Most plastic shower curtains are made of a material called PVC. The Center for Health, Environment, and Justice revealed that one of these shower curtains released volatile organic compounds (VOCs)16 times greater than the recommended limit for indoor air quality. Anyone who opens a new shower curtain can’t help but smell the strong plastic smell that comes off of it. Better bets are shower doors or fabric curtains that can be laundered.

When we need to get lint or pet hair off of clothing or curtains, we often reach for the lint brush, which is really a sticky roll of tape on a handle. But a lint brush (a real one and not a cheap imitation) is so much better in so many ways. For one, a real lint brush will not just remove lint but also freshen up clothing, removing dust and dirt as well. This means that you can spend less time and money on the dry cleaner (which is better for the environment). A lint brush will also keep all of that tape out of the landfill. Look for a lint brush that contains natural bristles for the most green and the best results.
