Hurricane Sandy Relief Continues to Pour In

Hurricane Sandy happened almost a month ago, but the devastation it left in its path will take a long time to clean up. There are still about 120,000 people without power in New York and New Jersey, but that also includes homes there were too damaged to have power anyhow. If anything good came from this, it is the generosity of Americans. Some physically went to damaged areas while others gave what they could to help the victims. I already wrote about celebrities that gave to Hurricane Sandy relief, but it is worthy to note that Lady Gaga donated $1 … Continue reading

Live Below the Line

My son is in third grade and at his school; they have a saying “Are you living above the line or below the line?” Of course, above the line is doing good things and living below the line is doing bad things, so they encourage the children to live above the line. But, living below the line isn’t always a bad thing. There is a new campaign I just discovered called “Live Below the Line.” What line are they talking about? The poverty line. Live Below the Line is asking people to change their lives for just 5 days by … Continue reading

Other City Bans on Disposable Plastic Bags

Yesterday was a big day for environmentalists – Los Angeles passed an ordinance to ban the use of plastic bags within the next year. But, LA is not the only city trying to get rid of plastic. (This image is from MorgueFile.) In October of last year, all stores in Portland, Oregon went plastic bagless after the state legislature failed to pass a state ban. However, knowing that some customers were going to forget, the city spent $10,000 on radio and bus ads to remind them. City officials also gave away 10,000 free reusable bags. Austin, Texas seems to be … Continue reading

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

You might look at that title and think “Libby, you’ve gotten your blogs confused! This should be in Pop Culture, not Green Living.” But wait, let me explain. As you probably know, I love combining pop culture and green living and today, it is easier than ever. Surely you remember the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The premise is that actor Kevin Bacon is the center of the universe and everyone is connected to him with six steps or less because it is truly a small world. It’s your job to try to connect an actor or actress to … Continue reading

Prince William Speaks Out Against Poaching

We all know how altruistic Princess Diana was. I remember how before her death, she campaigned for many charities including those for the homeless, sick, elderly, and children. She also toured land mines in Angola – pretty uncharacteristic for a princess if you ask me. Earlier this week, I blogged about Prince Charles and how he narrated a new documentary titled Harmony: A New Way of Looking At Our World, in which he talks about ways to stop climate change and find new ways to protect our environment. So, with two parents so involved in social issues, how could Prince … Continue reading

Groupon Snags Edward Norton

I’ve written before about Edward Norton in my Green Celebrity series. This week, Groupon, the deal-of-the-day website, announced that it is teaming up with Norton for an Earth Day challenge. Norton played green for the big screen (as the Incredible Hulk), but this time, the socially conscious actor is hoping this Groupon challenge will help raise funds for green causes. Norton, who is also a U.N. Ambassador for Biodiversity, also is involved in Crowdrise, which I’ve also blogged about before. In case you missed that blog, Crowdrise is a fundraising site for charities. In addition to Norton, other celebrities such … Continue reading

Celebrity Swag Weekend

If things were correct in this world, the people that can’t afford a lot would be the ones getting award show swag. After all, can’t most celebrities afford all this stuff anyhow? But, as it turns out on this Academy Awards weekend, the celebrities are making out like bandits. I guess it is only far because only a select few will take Oscar home this weekend. All the others get to take home the swag. What’s up for grabs this year? For the stars that stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, quite a few goodies. Lisa Gal … Continue reading

Celebrities Supporting the Natural Resources Defense Council

I am always blogging about green celebrities because it combines two of my passions – entertainment and environmentalism. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) offers me the best of both worlds. The NRDC, founded in 1970, uses “law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.” It was named one of America’s 100 best charities by Worth Magazine and the Better Business Bureau says NRDC has a high standard for accountability and making good use of its … Continue reading

Disney Channel Friends for Change Games

“High School Musical” star Corbin Bleu at a prior Disney Games event In 2007 and 2008 the Disney Channel’s then-stars such as Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers competed in a series of gladiator-style games for charity. The event was filmed and called the Disney Channel Games. The Orlando Sentinel has the scoop that after a two-year break the games return in 2011, albeit with some changes. This time, in keeping with the theme “Friends for Change” that the Disney Channel’s developed for its Project Green program, the event’s called the Disney Channel Friends for Change Games. Rather than filming … Continue reading

Haiti Still in Trouble

The one year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti is coming up (January 12th). Almost half a million people were killed, but 1.3 million were left homeless. The world took notice and pledged $10 billion – yes, billion – in aid. But, the problem is that almost a year later, Haiti is still a mess. Last October, there was an outbreak of cholera. The disease outbreak started near Port-au-Prince. Over 3,000 people were killed and within 10 weeks, the cholera outbreak, believed to be caused by drinking infected water, had spread to all of Haiti. If you thought that all … Continue reading
