Go Green With Home Based Work

Working from home is wonderful for many reasons. If living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle is important to you, working from home can enable you to combine your career ambitions with your personal values. At the most basic level, imagine all of the gasoline and greenhouse gas emissions that you would save by cutting out your commute, not to mention the time that you would save. In both the United States and elsewhere, the average commute to work is about a half hour each way. Some people have even longer commutes, driving an hour or more each day to and from … Continue reading

What is Greenwashing?

Green seems to be the new black. It seems as if every company and every product it produces wants to be seen as eco-friendly and green. Some products even claim to be new and improved, less toxic, etc. But, are they really? Welcome to the world of greenwashing. Greenwashing is when a company or product says it’s green, but it’s not. Often, it’s just a ruse to get you to buy. Some products may make you think that by buying them, you are doing your part – helping prevent global warming, improving the quality of the air, saving wildlife and … Continue reading

More Green Athletes

Yesterday I was blogging about green athletes and I realized there were way more than I knew about, so this turned into a two-part blog. Competitive swimmer Natalie Coughlin needs minerals and vitamins to give her energy, especially during the Olympics. How does she get it? By having her own chickens lay fresh eggs and growing vegetables in her own garden. It’s not only Olympic athletes who try to live green though. NFL linebacker Will Witherspoon, an animal lover, raises Animal Welfare Approved grass-fed cattle. He spoke before Congress against the practice of feeding farm animals antibiotics. NFL fullback Ovie … Continue reading

Are Tiny Holes Draining Your Energy Budget?

Eat your greens. Floss your teeth. Insulate your attic. While we weren’t energy-saving wizards, we thought that we’d covered most of the bases of healthy and energy-efficient living. But the energy bills kept on coming and the floors were cold. That’s when we realized that we were living in a sieve. It was a nice sieve. Bamboo floors, hemp curtains, walls painted in low-VOC off white. It was the blower door test that revealed the problem. Imagine this: a man comes to your door with something resembling a giant fan, installs it in said door, and seems to suck all … Continue reading

Growing Green Kids

Earth Day 2012 kicks off in just a few hours. How are you planning to celebrate? Contrary to popular belief, the special occasion is not only commemorated by tree huggers and granola lovers. Rather, these days, Earth Day organizers are targeting tech-obsessed kids in hopes of inspiring a new generation to go green. In some parts of the world parents are being encouraged to get their kids to give up their favorite electronic devices for the day, and instead turn their attention to preserving the earth’s natural resources such as air, water, plants and animals. This, of course, is easier … Continue reading

Food for Green Thought

It’s a new year and usually I blog about green New Year’s resolutions. But, this year, I read something on Facebook that I wanted to talk about instead. A friend of mine posted a status I am sure she copied from someone else. I won’t post it all because it was rather lengthy, but I will give you the Reader’s Digest version. It talked about how “she” went to a grocery store and the cashier suggested she bring her own bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. She then replied, “We didn’t have this green thing back in … Continue reading

Easy Green – Part 2

Yesterday, I was listing a few easy, quick ways to go green. Here are some more suggestions: 1. Fill up the dishwasher Don’t run the dishwasher half full. Wait until you have a full load before you run it to be more efficient. If you have an Energy Star dishwasher, you will save an average of 20 gallons of water to do the full load of dishes in it rather than doing them by hand. That can average out to about 5,000 gallons of water a year. So, not only are you saving water, you also end up saving money … Continue reading

Easy Green

One thing I seem to always hear from my friend is “I wanna be green, but it just seems expensive and hard.” Okay, so maybe you don’t have thousands of dollars to replace your kitchen appliances with new Energy Star appliances all at once. And maybe it is too expensive where you live to purchase organic meats and fruit. Maybe you live in an urban area where you can’t grow your own produce or you don’t have enough money to trade your old clunker car in for a hybrid. But, as I have said before, being green isn’t always expensive … Continue reading
