The Green Party

I don’t know about you, but I am a bit worn out with all the presidential race news. But, one thing I haven’t heard much about, unfortunately, is the Green Party. It seems like Al Gore should be its presidential candidate, but the Green Party candidates are actually Dr. Jill Stein and her vice-presidential candidate, Cheri Honkala. The Green Party isn’t new – it’s been around since 1984. What is their platform? According to its homepage, the Green Party, or “Greens” as they call themselves, “are grassroots activists, environmentalists, advocates for social justice, nonviolent resisters and regular citizens who’ve had … Continue reading

Green Halloween Costumes

It’s almost Halloween! If you are still looking for costume ideas, why not consider a green costume? What are some green Halloween costume ideas? Well, you could dress as a recycle bin. Just find a box and cut a hole in the middle of the bottom, one big enough for you to fit into it. Cover it with blue or green paper or paint it. Be sure to include the three arrow recycle triangle. Put the box on (you may need to attach straps to keep it secure) and fill it with empty boxes, cans, and bag. If you want … Continue reading

Green Musicians – Bob Geldof

Back in the early 80’s, I knew of Bob Geldof for only one reason – he was the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. The one single I remember from them was “I Don’t Like Mondays,” which Geldof wrote after Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire on an elementary school in San Diego in 1979. Geldof would later organize events that would make him well known around the world. In 1984, Geldof teamed up with Midge Ure of Ultravox to write the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was written in reference to the people of Ethiopia who were … Continue reading

Latest BP Oil Spill News

President Obama put the smack down on BP the other day, saying the company would put $20 billion in a fund that would go to those affected by the Gulf oil spill. BP won’t have to cough up all the money at once to prevent a panic among investors. But, investors got bad news as BP announced it would not pay any dividends for the rest of 2010. There was a payment scheduled for June 21 which was for about $2.6 million which has since been cancelled. The oil continues to flow out of the broken rig. Scientists have estimated … Continue reading

It is Fashion Week in New York and many up and coming designers were concentrating on one thing – sustainable fashion. The Greenshows part of Fashion Week was held during four days this week in Village Green, an environmentally friendly condo in East Village. Among the designers featured their eco couture was Gary Harvey, who made a fun dress of recycled laundry bags and newspaper pages. Other designs of his featured reclaimed fabric from such items as wedding dress, old t-shirts and jeans, trench coats, scarves, and Army jackets. Harvey said, “Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They … Continue reading

Green Homeless Shelters – Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter

Yesterday, I blogged about Crossroads, a new green homeless shelter that is about to open in East Oakland, Calif. But, it was not the first homeless shelter certified green. The Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, Va. opened August 4th of last year. The 16,931 square foot shelter was among the first to receive the Green Globes certification. The Green Globes certification is awarded to structures by the Green Building Initiative of Portland, Ore. The shelter, which can hold up to 20 families, offers an eco-friendly, safe, and secure environment where the families can stay while trying to get … Continue reading

Do You Live In a “Green” City?

The availability of eco-friendly jobs is a major factor in determining if you live in a “green” city. We all know that the United States is struggling economically. The latest numbers indicate that our unemployment rate is at 10%. There has been a lot of talk in the news that increasing the availability of green jobs would cause the unemployment rate to decrease. I recently read that the following cities promised more green living jobs: New York City, San Francisco, Boston/Cambridge, Detroit and Portland. It would make sense that the more eco-friendly jobs there are, the greener the city would … Continue reading

How to Have a Green New Year’s Party

Ringing in the New Year does not have to mean an excess of waste and environmental impact. With a little bit of planning, you can enjoy a great party and be responsible at the same time. Here are some thoughts about how to have a green New Year’s Eve party. Champagne Flutes Whether you opt for real champagne or sparkling cider, avoid the plastic champagne flutes. Not only are they pretty tacky, but they also negatively impact the planet. Real flutes aren’t much more money, especially if you buy them at Overstock.com or Amazon.com in bulk. Plus, you’ll have them … Continue reading
