Halloween on a Budget

Who says you have to go broke prepping for Halloween? If you are terrified by the prospect of draining your wallet on frightful costumes, props and decorations, then consider these budget-saving ideas that will help scare away the money blues:

Pun-ny: A little creativity can go a long way on October 31st, especially if you are a fan of puns. For example, you can use a knife and a cereal box to be a “Cereal Killer.” Or, place a loaf of bread in a baseball mitt and goes as the “Catcher in the Rye.” Another affordable option is to dress all in pink and carry a feather to pull of a “Tickled Pink” costume.

Cheap: One of the best ways to save on Halloween costumes is to use everyday items to create a winning look. In college I dressed up as a laundry basket. To pull off the look, throw on some sweats, and then cut the bottom out of a laundry basket. Make sure the hole is big enough for you to climb in, but small enough to rest on top of your hips. If you can’t get the basket to stay, then connect some straps on the laundry basket to place over your shoulders. If you can’t afford to spare a laundry basket, dress up as static clean. Instead of wearing a laundry basket, use safety pins to attach socks, underwear, shirts, or shorts to your outfit. Finally, spike your hair with gel to complete the look.

Last-Minute: Find a friend and go as black-eyed peas to a Halloween party by drawing a black circle over one eye and taping a paper cut-out of the letter P to a shirt. Or, throw together a last-minute Old Lady costume. Simply sport an oversized dress or bathrobe, place curlers in your hair and don a hair net. Or dump some powder on your hair, wear some old glasses and carry a large purse.
