Handmade Touches for the Thanksgiving Table

Do you like to sew or otherwise make decorative elements for your home? While some people may do things like this year round, others may be more inclined to do so during the holiday season. Maybe, you have never tried to make your own decorations but if that’s the case, don’t let it stop you.

One way to practice your skills is to make beautiful accents for your holiday table. Tablecloths are simple and can be made from most any large piece of fabric, by simply cutting to size and hemming the edges.

Place mats and table runners can be made in a variety of ways and since they don’t require nearly as much fabric, they are an affordable way to add attractive elements to your table.

Leaf patternLeaf shaped place mats are a great touch for your Thanksgiving table and they are easy to make. If you draw, simply sketch a large leaf to use as a pattern. If not, just print the leaf pattern shown, or another leaf pattern that you like (even better if you can find a large one). Trace around the edges with a pencil until you achieve the desired size. It’s easier if you first attach the leaf pattern to a large piece of paper or poster board so you have plenty of room to trace.

If you aren’t big on sewing and don’t want to have to mess with the edges, cut your fabric with pinking shears or cover rough edges by using fabric glue to add trim.
