Happier Mornings

Are your mornings hectic and stressful? Mine used to be so bad that I almost dreaded them. Hailey and I would get our day off to a bad start because we would wind up snapping at each other.

When I was married we all left the house at the same time, this meant that I had help getting Hailey motivated and out the door. Once I was divorced it was just me.

No matter what time we got up Hailey would drag her feet until it was time to walk out the door then we would spend another ten minutes looking for homework and shoes. It frustrated me to no end that she couldn’t keep those things organized.

I hated starting our mornings that way. It made me sad to go to work knowing that I was grouchy and stressed so I decided to do something about it.

First we started picking out our clothes the night before. Everything from underclothes to jewelry was decided on before bed and put together so it was easy to grab in the morning. Once we had our outfits picked out we chose what shoes and outerwear we would need and put those by the door.

I had a table by the door and this is where we put everything we needed for the morning. My purse, Hailey’s backpack, keys, homework, scarves and hats.

Next, we decided on breakfast. Cereal bowls, spoons, whatever was needed was put on the table, ready for the morning.

We also decided on a progression for our mornings. Many times Hailey would spill her breakfast on herself after she was dressed, requiring another outfit search. We ended that problem by eating breakfast in our pajamas and then getting dressed.

Some mornings were still crazy. We would oversleep and Hailey would eat a pop tart walking to the bus stop but even those mornings were helped by our night before organization.
