Harry Potter and Michael Jackson Themed Trips

If your kids are wild about Harry, then hit the road for a literary journey featuring the fictional boy wizard’s favorite haunts.

Last week’s release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has sparked a slew of travel deals inspired by J.K. Rowling’s books about wannabe wizards, including:

Skyscanner.net is offering tours of 13 key locations in the Potter Universe, from Platform 9¾ at London’s Kings Cross Station to Romania, home to the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary.

Fandango.com is featuring a Summer Movie Road Trips section that offers travelers the chance to visit Harry Potter’s Rolling Green British Isles.

Meanwhile, for penny-pinching parents of American Muggles, consider checking out “Harry Potter: The Exhibition,” which runs through September 27 at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibit includes more than 200 props and costumes from the film series.

Michael Jackson may be finally resting in peace, but his memory is very much alive in his boyhood home of Gary, Indiana.

Looking to make the most of an unfortunate situation, a Chicago-based tour company is selling tickets for a trip from Chicago to Gary to see Michael Jackson’s childhood home and other places associated with his younger years.

“The King of Pop Hometown Tour” includes stops at:

*2300 Jackson St., which was the singer’s boyhood home

*Jackson’s junior high school

*The high school where the superstar’s siblings attended

*The steel mill where his father worked

*One of the first places the Jackson 5 performed

The tour’s ad also promises “never-before-told funny stories from former classmates and childhood friends.”

The tours are scheduled to start July 25th, with departures Saturday, Sunday, Thursday and Friday. Buses depart 12:30 p.m. from a parking lot near Borders in Hyde Park and return four hours later. The 30-mile trip to Gary takes a little under an hour each way. Tickets are $55 ($45 for ages 6-12; free for under 5).
