Men’s Health Week

Did you know that the week leading up to Father’s Day is National Men’s Health Week? This is a great time to talk about preventable health problems that can affect men and boys. Hundreds of cities and organizations around the world are celebrating Men’s Health Week.

So what can you do to celebrate Men’s Health Week? Schedule an appointment with your doctor for a complete physical. Do it every year before Father’s Day! Talk about your family medical history, your risk factors for different diseases, your weight, your diet, and anything else health-related. But before you go, check out The Appointment — a quick and funny video about how to communicate with your doctor.

What makes a healthy lifestyle for you and your family?

  • Regular exercise — at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week or more.
  • A healthy diet — including foods from all food groups.
  • Enough rest — and a regular sleep schedule.
  • Closeness with friends and family — socializing stimulates your brain!
  • Regular check-ups with the family doctor — men tend to be less likely to schedule those annual screenings and physicals.

Even Congress gets in on the Men’s Health Week action. For the last eight years, Congressional leaders and staffers in Washington, D.C. have kicked off Men’s Health Week with three-day health screenings on Capitol Hill. Why? To show everyone how simple and pain-free many diagnostic tests can be AND how easy it is to save lives with early detection of health problems.

Future dates for Men’s Health Week:

  • June 9-15 2008
  • June 15-21 2009
  • June 14-20 2010

Mark your calendars now! Men’s Health Week shouldn’t be the ONLY time you think about your health, gentlemen… but it’s a good time to take an annual look at your overall health and well-being. After all, the people who love you want to see and celebrate you for many Father’s Days to come.
