If you are looking to start a home-based business and you would like to spend time outdoors while you work, you may want to consider starting a landscaping business. Depending upon the geographic area where you live, you may want to turn your landscaping business into a year-round enterprise by offering services like leaf clean up and snow removal during times of year when those things are needed more than lawn mowing and hedge trimming. Landscapers that provide high quality work and have good customer service skills are always in demand.
Some of the things that you will want to think about before trying to start a landscaping business include what tools or equipment you have that you can use versus how much you will need to buy and whether you can afford to do that. Don’t forget that you will need some sort of truck and/or trailer combination to move your equipment from job site to job site. Another consideration is whether you will be working alone or with others. Some couples and families even choose to make landscaping a family business. Your spouse may wish to join in the business venture or you may have children that are both interested in landscaping and old enough to help you safely. Other factors include how frequently each client or property needs your services, what kinds of services you will provide to each client or property, and how long it takes you to do each job.
A great way to get the word out about your new landscaping business is to get your own yard in top form. Make sure it looks just right and then put up a sign with your company name and phone number. When people see your beautiful yard along with a name and number that they can call to get their yard looking that good, they will call and schedule an appointment. Do not be surprised or concerned if people begin slowing down when they drive by your house – they are just admiring your landscaping and are probably writing down your phone number.
When you are just starting out it may be helpful to build your schedule slowly and carefully to ensure that you have time and energy to deliver great work. If you feel that you can add more work later, then you can find more clients. In fact, it probably will not be long before your existing clients are sending referral business your way because their friends have seen how great their yard looks and have asked them for your phone number.
