Starting a Business in Your Line of Work (or Trying Something New)

Figuring out what your home business is going to be all about can come easily for some of us, but for others, we might spend years just trying to sort out what we think we ought to be doing, what we’re good at, and what we actually want to do. One of the big questions is whether to start a home business in a field that you already work in and have experience in, or do you go after something you’ve always wanted to do or head into a brand new field?

The pros of starting a business doing something you are already familiar with are that you already have the knowledge, contacts, and inside experience. People who decide to start their own consulting businesses will often take some of their best clients and customers along with them. I have known a few people who technically retired from their traditional jobs and then continued to “consult” with some key clients and built thriving little home businesses. If you generally enjoy the work you have been doing, but want more autonomy and flexibility, and you have specialized experience and knowledge to market, this could be the best way to go.

Starting a business in something new can be exciting and rewarding too, however. If you have always wanted to do something—taking the leap and starting a business may just be the way to go. We all know someone who toiled away in a corporate job until he or she finally took the leap and opened a bar, a bed and breakfast, or starting a daycare or catering company. It is hard to go completely wrong following your passions. It might take a while to get up to speed and there will certainly be a learning curve, but you can take classes and work on your business on the side until you have the confidence and expertise to focus entirely on your home business. Plus, you will have the joy and passion to keep you going during the tough times.
