Homework is Ineffective

After dropping off my oldest at school, (I have one child in school.) I heard an interesting bit of news on the radio.  The news report was about a study that determined homework was ineffective.  Since, that study came out, it is said that many teachers and schools are trying to cut back on homework.  This is relieving for many students and parents who claim the kids have hours of homework a night.

Homeschooling parents do not assign homework.   Students may have assignments to work on outside of school hours but in reality there is no end to learning in the homeschool home.  Most homeschoolers get their work done during the time allotted for studying.  Mostly this is because they are the usually the only one in their class.  My son gets plenty of school done while I am teaching my daughter.  My kids are not accustomed to homework.  Some say that is a detriment.  I disagree.  My kids learn to get their assigned work done in a timely fashion in the hours given to them.  They also have plenty of time to rest and play so they are fresh and better focused on work given to them.

My husband was even one to worry that my oldest would have a hard time adjusting to school since she never had homework.  I never understood the logic behind homework.  If you are in school for 7 hours, you should be able to come home and be with your family.  Children need time to be children and time with family.  They do not need to do one more assignment on something they should have learned in school.  I understand extra practice but hours a night is ineffective.  At any rate, my daughter had no trouble adjusting because she is well organized by nature and her school is not focused on homework.  She is in high school and hardly has any homework.  The best thing about that is her school is ranked as one of the best in the country.

So, I guess no homework is just one more thing homeschooling has right.
