How to Cut Down on Junk Mail Clutter

junk mail I wonder how much time that we spend on a monthly basis dealing with junk mail clutter? Kitchen counters or desks piled high with the stuff, late fees on bills that got lost in the piles, time spent sorting through it all.Think about how the minutes can add up to hours or even days in the course of the year.

Junk mail can be a big source of clutter. No one really wants to deal with it, especially if we are collecting it right before we walk in the door after a long day of work or dealing with the kids. To eliminate this source of chaos in your house, you will need to have a couple of strategies to help you deal with it.

Get it Before It Enters the Home

Our mailbox is at the top of or driveway. Our recycling container is at the bottom of our driveway. I grab the mail and quickly sort through it on the walk down to the house. Anything that is clearly junk gets tossed in the can and never has a chance to invade out home. You can place a covered container on your porch, in your garage, or whatever works for you.

Deal with It Immediately

When the mail does come in the house, deal with it immediately. Take it over to your recycling bin or trash and sort it right there while you are standing. Open everything that looks important and only keep what you need. For example, you can pull out your bill and return envelope but toss the inserts and the original envelope the bill was delivered in.

Take it with You

My daughter had an early morning skating lesson. Along with my purse, my cup of coffee and the skating bag, I also grabbed a canvas bag and stuffed the mail pile into it. Then while she was having her lesson, I was able to write bills, fill out paper work, sort magazines and discard unwanted mail.

Use this strategy whenever you anticipate having to wait, such as during a doctor’ appointment, a car repair, a sports event, etc.
