Hurricane Sandy Relief Continues to Pour In

Hurricane Sandy happened almost a month ago, but the devastation it left in its path will take a long time to clean up. There are still about 120,000 people without power in New York and New Jersey, but that also includes homes there were too damaged to have power anyhow.

If anything good came from this, it is the generosity of Americans. Some physically went to damaged areas while others gave what they could to help the victims.

I already wrote about celebrities that gave to Hurricane Sandy relief, but it is worthy to note that Lady Gaga donated $1 million to New York and the American Red Cross.

But, celebrities aren’t the only ones giving. Many companies and their employees pledged money for relief.

JP Morgan Chase pledged $5 million, with half going to the American Red Cross and half going to local relief agencies.

Hess Corp. and Johnson & Johnson also committed $5 million each to help the hardest hit areas.

Prudential Foundation donated $3 million to various charities including the Salvation Army and American Red Cross.

Samsung Electronics North America also pledged $3 million to the American Red Cross

The New Brunswick Health Care Company donated much needed hygiene kits to AmeriCares clinics that helped those in need. The company also pledged to match all employee donations.

Wells Fargo donated $1 million with a fourth of it going to the American Red Cross and the rest going to nonprofits in the areas hit.

Bank of America
Charitable Foundation donated $1 million and will match employee giving.

Capital One Bank also pledged $1 million as well as $600,000 in grants to provide continued aid to the area.

CitiBank’s Citi Foundation promised $1 million to the American Red Cross. It also helped provide trucks filled with food, water, and other much needed supplies.

ExxonMobil committed to $1 million which will go to help not only the New Jersey and New York area, but also the Caribbean, which was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

Other companies that helped include News Corporation, Kellogg Company, Procter & Gamble, Becton, Dickinson and Company, Time Warner Inc., McDonald’s Corporation, Taylor Management Co. of Whippany, T-Mobile, Aetna, Macy’s, UPS, Western Union, FedEx Corp., Turner Broadcasting System, Warner Brothers, IDT Energy of Newark, TD Ameritrade, MetLife, Rite Aid, Target Corp., Kohl’s Department Store.

About Libby Pelham

I have always loved to write and Families.com gives me the opportunity to share my passion for writing with others. I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
