Ice Cream Soda Day!

I’ll bet you didn’t know it, but June 20th is Ice Cream Soda Day. I didn’t know it until just a little while ago. It seems as though more and more special days are coming up that I have never heard of before. Ice Cream Soda Day though is a good one. It brought back some special memories for me anyway.

When I was about 5 or 6 we lived in the city where everything was within walking distance. All the important things to a kid anyway. There was the penny candy store, the ice cream fountain, the movie theater and the candy and trinket store. There was also the dentist, but I am not going to talk about him.

We went to a school, which was also within walking distance. They had a terrible set up at lunch time. You had to go home, eat your lunch and come back. What!? Nobody wanted to go back once they got home where everything was familiar and safe.

I had three older brothers and a sister so I was taken care of. They were the only reason I made it back to school. If it were not for them I probably would have put up a fuss. Oftentimes, on the way home, we stopped at the ice cream fountain. It was the best. Ice cream sodas were my favorite and they knew it. I remember sitting up at the counter of the soda fountain watching them make my chocolate ice cream soda. It is a vague recollection, but it is there. My sister was with me. I think my brothers were too.

I have not had an ice cream soda in a very long time so I think that June 20th would be an appropriate day to have one now that I have an excuse.

To make a good ice cream soda you need to combine whatever flavor of ice cream that you desire (chocolate for me), chocolate or strawberry syrup, seltzer water, whipped cream and a cherry on top! Voila.
