More of the people we lost in 2012:

March 2012

5 – Robert B. Sherman – Natural Causes (86)

Songwriter Sherman wrote “It’s a Small World (After All)” and penned songs for other musicals including Mary Poppins, Charlotte’s Web, The Jungle Book, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

11 – Michael Hossack – Cancer (64)

Hossack was the drummer for the Doobie Brothers, appearing on eleven of the band’s albums.

29 – Ronnie Montrose – Suicide (64)

Montrose was a guitarist who had played with such acts as Sammy Hagar, Johnny Winter, Boz Scaggs, Van Morrison, and Sammy Hagar.  At the time of his death, he had been fighting prostate cancer.

28 – Earl Scruggs – Natural Causes (88)

Scruggs was the surviving half of Flatt and Scruggs, a bluegrass duo famous for such hits as “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” for the television show “The Beverly Hillbillies.”  Scruggs received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche – Unknown Causes (76)

Porsche was the grandson of engineer Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche who also created the 1923 Benz Tropfenwagen.  Porsche designed the first Porsche 911.

18 – Dick Clark – Heart Attack (82)

The man dubbed “America’s Oldest Teen” for his hosting duties on “American Bandstand,” Clark was also known for hosting the game show “Pyramid” as well as the yearly “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and “TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes” with Ed McMahon.  He was also the creator of the American Music Awards.

19 – Levon Helm – Throat Cancer (71)

A day after losing Clark, music lost Levon Helm, the drummer and singer for The Band.  Helm’s voice can be heard on such hits as “The Weight” and “Up on Cripple Creek.”  He also appeared in several films including <i>Coal Miner’s Daughter</i> and <i>The Right Stuff</i>.

23 – Tommy Marth – Suicide (33)

Marth was a saxophonist who played for The Killers and had recently served as the nightlife marketing manager at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas.
