Indiana Genealogy Resources

American flag and Indiana flag The state motto for Indiana is “The Crossroads of America”. Did your ancestors travel through Indiana on their way to somewhere else? Perhaps you are searching for more information about ancestors who lived in Indiana. Check out some of these Indiana genealogy resources. Most of them are free to use.

GeneaLinks has a page dedicated to Indiana Genealogy records. Put your ancestor’s name into the search engine. Choose the record type you want to look for: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”.

There are also links that will let your search public records. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to Indiana Genealogy research. Did you know that most Indiana genealogy documents date from 1900?

Ancestry.com has a page filled with links to their Indiana collections of records. To access the majority of these collections, you must have an Ancestry.com membership. Some collections are offered for free, every once in a while. Return to this page often. Ancestry.com will make it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is being offered for free.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has a blog. The first link on the blog will take you to their Facebook page. This is a good resource for genealogists who want to find out about other genealogy blogs and when genealogy websites add records that pertain to Indiana.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page that is all about Indiana. You can start by clicking on links for any of the counties in Indiana. Scroll down to find more research tools. That section has links to Indiana genealogy resources that are located outside of FamilySearch, as well as links to FamilySearch’s collections of Indiana records.

Interment.net is an online collection of cemetery records. They have a page dedicated to the cemeteries in Indiana. You can browse cemeteries by county, (however, not every county is searchable). Or, use the search engine at the top of their page to do a more direct search about a particular ancestor.

Cyndi’s List is the most comprehensive collection of links to online genealogy resources. They have a page called “United States – Indiana”. Start by selecting a category. Some categories include: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and many more. This is a great place to start from for genealogists who are new to Indiana genealogy.
