Inexpensive Decorating Projects for Your Home

Here are a few ideas for improving your space by doing simple and elegant decorative projects for your home that hardly cost a thing:

Shadow boxes
Fit four short pieces of wood together into a rectangle or square, about one to two inches deep, or deep enough to set something upon it. Paint the wood or stain it. Make a few of these shadow boxes and group them together. Place similar items inside them. You can use these boxes as an inexpensive way to showcase collections, candles, or small, potted flowers.

Fabric wall art
Buy a lightweight board and have it cut your desired size for a wall-hanging. With a staple gun, cover the board with a piece of decorative fabric and staple the fabric around the back side of the board. Choose a design that makes a statement and the fabric automatically becomes a work of art. Finish the project by nailing a wall mount or two into the back of the wood, and hang the board on the wall. This type of decoration can be done in any size from a few inches square to a few feet long.

Black and white photos
Take some of your favorite family photos to the printer and have them blown up into large black and white copies. Feel free to experiment with different sizes and crop the images to get exactly what you’re going for. Option one: frame these in repainted garage sale frames. Option two: use rubber cement to glue them directly to a wooden board, similar to the fabric wall art described above.

Creative Painting Projects
Add a touch of class to your walls by doing more than the traditional solid-color paint job. Try a mural, some stenciling, texturing, or painted stripes on one or more walls of a room. Doing a fancy painting project reduces or eliminates the need for other more expensive decorations on that wall.
